During my last visit to the city of Bodø, me and my travel companion Michel witnessed the true beauty of the northern lights. We knew the odds were in favor that weekend, but could never have guessed that we would witness a geometric outburst of level 7/8.

It was around 7PM and I think we were just about an hour in the hotel, when we checked the forecast and decided to give it a go and drive with the rental car outside the city. We finally arrived on a beach in Mjelle. It was so dark that we had to use our lights from the smartphones to position ourselves and I actually discovered that there was a house on the beach while editing the photos.
After a wait of about 2 hours, it started very slowly with a little spark. After a while came a second and third bow, a candle, … and just when we thought it was over, we witnessed a 45 minute long jaw dropping lightshow that suddenly came out of nowhere.

That 1st of December 2022 is forever marked in my agenda as THE day I watched Lady Aurora perform a spectacular dance and witnessed an array of stunning colors. I have no words for it, it was just unbelievable.

I took a lot of photos that evening and remember that at one point my friend Michel said “STOP with pressing the button and just watch it.. this is special“ … and so I did. Here’s a few shots .. with the most spectacular at the end of course.
